If Microsoft hopes to make inroads in the tablet market, it's going about it in a very odd way: Pricing its products too high to gain much market share. The latest instance is the just-announced prices for the Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet, at $899 for a 64 GB version and $999 for the 128 GB version.
Panos Panay, General Manager of Microsoft Surface, announced the pricing on the Official Microsoft Blog. He also announced that the Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available in January.
Those Surface prices, by the way, don't tell the true cost of the Surface models. Prices don't include a Touch Cover or Type Cover, which cost at least $120. So that puts the prices at $1019 for the 64 GB version and $1119 for the 128 GB version.
You can buy an iPad for $499 (with 16 GB only; it costs $599 for the 32 GB model, and $699 for the 64 GB model.) So why would you want to pay more than $1,000 for a Surface tablet?
The answer is that you wouldn't. At these prices, Surface Windows 8 Pro tablets are clearly aimed at enterprises, not the consumer market. And some analysts believe that Microsoft set the prices so high not in order to sell a lot of them, but to allow its competitor's prices to seem like bargains, and so help them sell plenty of those.
Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Gartner, told Computerworld:
"The Surface Pro pricing leaves room for device makers to come down in price without compromising margins too much. This is an enterprise play, not a consumer play, at least for now."
One benefit of the Surface Windows 8 Pro over the RT-based Surface is that because it runs Window 8 rather than RT, it will run desktop apps, which the RT-based Surface won't do. But at more than $1,000 that's a steep price to pay. Enterprises can an buy Windows 8 notebooks or even ultrabooks for less money.
There's another problem with aiming the Surface Pro at the enterprise market: Enterprises aren't particularly keen on Windows 8 at the moment because it breaks so significantly with past versions of Windows. And in a BYOD world, there's no reason to choose a Windows-based tablet over an iPad.
The upshot? Because of its pricing, I don't expect the Surface Pro to be a winner.

Ever since Sony absorbed Ericsson’s stake in the company and became just Sony Mobile, the company has went on to flood the market with a ton of new phones, some of them with just minor differences from the other. One such phone is the new Xperia ion, which differs from the previous
Xperia S in so few ways you can count them all on one hand with fingers to spare. We decided to take a look and see what all is new.
Design
The design is one of the major differences between the Xperia ion and the Xperia S. The Xperia S is a fine looking phone but the Xperia ion takes things up a few notches. It drops the now familiar transparent glass strip at the bottom and goes for a monolithic design. You’ll notice on the front that there are now four instead of three keys below the displays, each with its own icons. We’ll get to these later.
On the back you will find an all new metal shell covering almost the entire back surface. There are just three plastic strips, one each on the top, bottom and the left, which is where all the antennas reside. The top portion comes off and inside you will find the micro SIM and the microSD card slot. The NFC antenna is also located at the top, so that’s where you’ll have to touch the phone if you want to initiate a data transfer.
On the right edge of the phone (when seen from the front) are the power button, volume control buttons and the camera shutter key. All these keys are extremely thin and small for such a large phone and difficult to use, particularly the power button, which is just the most annoying thing on the entire phone. It’s ridiculously tiny so your finger keeps hunting for it every time you want to lock or unlock the phone unless you are looking directly at it. The positioning of the power and volume buttons on the same side of the phone also makes it awkward to take screenshots.
On the left side of the phone are the micro USB and micro HDMI ports placed neatly inside a plastic flap. They are both nearly of the same shape so you will have a hard time initially figuring out which is which and it doesn’t get any easier in the dark when you’re trying to connect a cable.
On the top sits the lonely headphone jack in the middle.
Getting back to the keys below the display, if you read our Xperia S review, you’d know that I complained a lot about the unfortunately design of these keys, which makes them extremely difficult and frustrating to use. Unfortunately, instead of improving upon that design, Sony has made it worse on the Xperia ion.
All four keys have icons and none of them are backlit. Instead, there is a tiny white strip of light below each of them that is so dim that it is hard to see even in darkness. Now here comes the ridiculous part. The touch sensors for these keys is placed on neither the icons nor the white strips but rather slightly above the icons and just below the display. So if you press on the icon basically nothing happens until you realize you have to press a bit above. And even then the touch area is extremely small and the keys aren’t very sensitive so if you press lightly or a bit below nothing happens. And in the dark it’s practically things get even worse because the stupid strips of light switch off a few seconds later, causing you to hunt around for the keys.
At this point it seems Sony was just trying to see how far the user could go before they throw the phone out of the window out of sheer frustration. If this was not their intention then it makes me wonder what on Earth would have made them chose such an atrocious design for such an important part of the phone’s user experience and why couldn’t they learn from the universally hated keys below the Xperia S. It also makes you wonder how much time Sony actually spent testing these devices before deeming them fit for selling on the market.
Other than that the hardware of the Xperia ion feels really great. It’s not as narrow as the Xperia S due to the bigger display, which we will talk about next, but the metal body feels really sturdy and premium, especially compared to plasticky phones like the Galaxy S III or the Optimus 4X HD. Even the design is very handsome and carries the classic Sony design language of simple but strong design lines. Just wish it was more user friendly.
Display
The display is the second biggest difference on the Xperia ion over the Xperia S. The Xperia S had a 4.3-inch HD display whereas the 4.55-inch HD display. On paper it might seem as if it’s just a bigger display but it’s not just that, it’s a much better display. The Xperia S display was pretty mediocre and the only thing really going for it was the pixel density, which is very high. The Xperia ion display trades some of the pixel density for significantly better colors, contrast and black levels.
The display on the Xperia ion looks really rich and vibrant and colors, to use the tired phrase, really pop. Photos, videos, games, applications, everything looks better on this screen compared to the Xperia S. It still hasn’t improved in some aspects, though. It is still using a low refresh rate, which causes noticeable blur while scrolling, especially in the browser and the viewing angles are still unimpressive. But overall this display is a big leap ahead of the Xperia S display. Still not as good as the display on the One X, though, which remains the best in the business.
Hardware and Software
That is pretty much it when it comes to differences between the Xperia ion and the Xperia S. On the inside, both the phones are running the exact same hardware. On the hardware front, both phones have a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260 SoC with a dual-core 1.5GHz Scorpion CPU and Adreno 220 GPU. On the memory side, both phones have 1GB of RAM. Only differences is that the Xperia S had 32GB non-expandable internal memory whereas the Xperia ion has 16GB with a microSD card slot.
On the software side, the Xperia S launched with Android 2.3, Gingerbread but things have changed in the past month and it now runs on Android 4.0.4, Ice Cream Sandwich, which is exactly the same as the software found on the Xperia ion.
Since this is the first time we are seeing it, I’d like to talk about it. Having used a lot of custom Android user interfaces over the years, I must say I love what Sony has done with the software on these new Xperia phones. The UI on the new ICS ROMs on these phones is top notch and at least to me is the best looking of all the custom interfaces out there. The UI is just plain classy and unmatched in the aspect by any of its competitors. Sense UI in comparison just seems bloated and gaudy while the Nature UX looks its usual juvenile self. Sony’s UI is sleek, stylish, user friendly and filled with some nice touches.
Take the Album application, for example, which is the custom photo gallery app on the Xperia ion. The photos appear in a grid with the latest one being the largest. You can pinch to zoom on the grid to go from one image taking the entire width of the display to up to eight tiny images side by side. In this last mode you can have an incredible 104 thumbnails on the screen at once, which is convenient if you have a ton of images in the gallery.
Even the video player is nice. It shows large vertical thumbnails for your videos and when you click on them it shows you data pulled from Gracenote for your movies, such as description, actor names, etc.
There are a few things where the Xperia UI lags behind the competition, namely in the lockscreen and the notification screen department. All of its rivals are now offering the option to have multiple icons on the homescreen that you can quickly launch while simultaneously unlocking the phone. The Xperia UI only has the option to start the camera and even that is not very useful when you consider you can press and hold the shutter key to do the same.
The notification area is also lacking any shortcut icons that you can use to quickly access certain functions from anywhere in the UI.
The pre-installed software on the Xperia Ion is fairly minimal and you can uninstall most of them. They will, however, return if you choose to reset your phone.
Performance
A good looking UI is just half the story. The performance is equally important. Unfortunately, here things are a bit of a mixed bag for the Xperia ion. The UI stutters quite a bit when using the stock applications on the phone. This is especially noticeable when using the Settings applications. It's a bit perplexing because none of these applications are particularly complex and shouldn't be taxing the system so much.
However, things are quite a bit different while running third party applications. Basic applications such as Twitter or Facebook to high quality 3D games such as Dead Trigger were handled perfectly by the Xperia ion despite running on last year's hardware. The performance difference between the stock and third party apps is a bit alarming and points to lack of optimization on Sony's part rather than the hardware itself, which seems capable of handling almost anything that you can throw at it.
Moving on to the other aspects of the performance, I noticed that the loudspeaker on the Xperia ion sounded terrible. It was barely audible in some cases and sounded as if it was being blocked by something. You could boost the sound a bit by using the xLOUD present in the settings but that just makes it a bit louder and the quality remains terrible.
Thankfully, Sony provides a solid pair of in-ear headset with the phone. The sound quality with these is really good for a bundled pair of earphones and most people would never feel the need to upgrade.
I tried playing some HD videos on the Ion. The default video player, although looks great and pulls up useful information, does not support a lot of formats. You can easily get around that problem, though, by downloading a free third party video player, such as MXPlayer or DicePlayer.
The network reception and the general radio performance on the Xperia ion was satisfactory.
Camera
The Xperia ion has the same 12 megapixel camera from the Xperia S. From the camera specifications down to the camera software is identical. In terms of image quality, this is still one of the best camera phones on the market, with superb high resolution images with good amount of detail. It’s only problem is the noise level, which is too high, even in day light images. This is remedied by using night mode in low light situations but you have to hold the phone very still or use support otherwise it generates blurry images.
Video quality-wise the camera isn’t particularly impressive. The videos have the same noisy look as the stills but lack the clarity and the detail and not in line with the quality offered by competing devices, such as the Galaxy S III.
Battery Life
I didn’t get time to run the Xperia ion through our usual battery life tests but in my daily usage I got around a day of battery life, which is similar to the Xperia S. With most of the specifications being identical between the two phones I can’t imagine the battery life being any different.
Verdict
The Xperia ion is a modest upgrade over the Xperia S but improves upon key factors such as display and build quality. Unfortunately, it is too similar in other aspects and even retains the annoying behavior of the keys below the display. It makes us wonder why Sony bothered with the original Xperia S at all if they were going to launch the ion just a few months later.
What makes things worse for the ion, though, is its pricing, which puts it right in the One X and Galaxy S III territory. As nice as the Xperia ion is, it is not good enough compared to these phones, both of which feature vastly more powerful hardware and better display performance. Had it been priced under the Rs. 30,000 mark, it would have been worth considering but at its current price I can’t help but suggest you give this one a miss. This is especially true considering Sony is bound to announce a new flagship soon in the form of the Xperia T/TX and you would definitely want to wait for that if you’re a Sony fan.

Pros and Cons
Samsung ATIV Pro is a machine that many may have wished for. Sleek, slim and technology upto date. The pricing for ATIV Smart PC Pro is Rs. 75,490/ , the ATIV Smart PC is priced at Rs. 53,990/-. A cheaper pricing may have worked better.
Storage at 128 GB is good for a tablet but when you market a product as a tablet plus a laptop plus a PC, then 128 GB leaves more to be desired.Weighing at 0.88 makes it an easy option to carry around.
In terms of Samsung warranty and service, well that’s a story best divided between the satisfied and dissatisfied customers.
The Last Word
One the cheapest tablets in India with a keyboard and mouse from Zync is priced at Rs. 3666/- with a one year “pickup from your premises” warranty. There are tens of such players in the market now. A high definition tablet is priced around Rs. 6000 in one of the ecommerce sites. They may not be a match for Samsung ATIV but for a price sensitive market like India where the demarcation between laptop consumers, PC consumers and tablet consumers is determined by more by affordability than choice, Samsung ATIV starting at Rs. 53,999 to Rs. 75,490 may just have some interesting competition from the Chinese tablets branded in India. Overall the machine is desirable and especially useful for those on the run.

India's World's cheapest tablet launch today
Priced at Rs 1700, the Indian government on Wednesday launched the world economic table - Aakash. Affordable tablets developed by the Indian Institute of Technology.
The low-cost tablet is primarily intended for educational purposes only and it is expected that the Android OS device with Wi-Fi can also be equipped with a 2 GB memory card with a mini USB port and full, a 32 GB of expandable memory, a miniSD card and a SIM card slot.
Speaking of the awards ceremony was held in New Delhi Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) last month, the Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said that the tablets would help children to cross the border in the classroom, and teachers to acquire knowledge through information technology.
The tablet has been developed as part of the National Ambassador to upgrade public education through sport and the Information and Communication Technology, which aims to combine the 25 000 schools and 400 universities of the e-Learning program.

Preview : Windows 8
Microsoft launched this on their website, and we on Commenti, are publishing a much detailed review on Windows 8.
So, Microsoft finally released its Windows 8 Developer Preview for us mortals a few hours back and after a lot of researching and using; we at Commenti bring you a detailed review on it. So, getting straight to business, here we start.
INSTALLATION & STARTUP
INSTALLATION & STARTUP
The installation is pretty simpler and a lot similar to Windows 7 Installation, except that this time Microsoft sure tried to add some humor to it.
The Installation was fairly quick (~12 minutes) on a separate installation with no scary blue screens, though I must add that I went through a lot of pains to download it There is no native USB boot support and you will need to activate the version (Free of cost, of course!) to use all the features.
METRO UI
So now, it asks me to restart my PC, and when I do, Whoa! It booted in 14 seconds(Yeah! Not a typo.) With a sleek Metro UI interface. (So far, so good!)
For those, who still couldn’t figure out, what this Metro UI is? It’s the similar to tile based application interface that Microsoft uses in Zune and Windows Phone 7.
APPS
I put in my Network Connection details and start fiddling with the various apps that I see on my home screen. First victim – Internet Explorer, of course.
I noticed that the page loads were a little bit faster than the last version of IE9 that I used, the Interface on the other hand, is a perfect example of Elegant and Minimalistic design combined. But, they removed the whole ritual of what we know of a “Right Click”, which, now opens up a drop down bar with currently open tabs.
I was surprised to know that the regular version of IE9 is also included in the bundle. more on that, in the coming sections.
Windows 8 Dev. Preview comes with 28 Metro Style apps preinstalled with it. Some of them are Socialite (Facebook), Tweet@rama (Twitter), Utilities (Alarm Clock, Notes, Weather etc.) and a few HTML5 based games (Which btw, I found really lame!). While the interface of all these apps are super neat and look awesome on the PC screen, they are a bit slow and hard to navigate. Then again, since all the apps in Windows 8 are HTML5 and JavaScript based (yes, really!) , so it was kind of expected that they would suck up the RAM more. It uses ~400 MB of RAM in idle state, which still can be considered light.
Till now, I was convinced that the Metro UI is best suited for a Touch-enabled PC as it supports various Multi Touch gestures. It’s much easier to flick between apps that to drag your mouse pointer.
One can dock one app while the other app is running, using flick of the mouse. (Check the image below). It looks pretty cool as the apps occupy full screen.
Now, you can’t really close an app, but an app goes to a dormant state (suspended state) after a certain period of idleness. Again, touch optimized. I still managed to close them with the new task Manager.
The apps interface is pretty much inspired from Mac Apps and soon Microsoft would be launching its own version of App Store known as Windows Store (It is disabled in the developer Preview).
Windows 8 retains the Windows Key + type to search feature, just more elegantly this time.
Two Interfaces, really?
So, in addition to the awesome Metro UI, Windows 8 incorporates the old interface of Windows 8. But, Microsoft tried to remove the Compability issue completely by doing it (Best of both Worlds, eh?), but for a normal Windows user like me it kind of gets clumsy at times, as what is where.
There are a lot more changes like Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer, Integrated App + File Search, Control Panel App.
NOTIFICATIONS
Finally, Notifications arrive for Windows. The settings can be changed to suit your mood.
PROS
1. Super-Fast Bootup. (But it’s definitely not 8 seconds.)
2. Metro UI is awesome for touch enabled devices.
3. Clean and elegant look.
4. Simple Social Network and Syncing Integration.
5. HTML5 based apps mean easy virtualization over networks.
6. Upcoming App Store will help bring more innovative apps to this platform.
7. Touch Friendly IE is fun to use.
8. Compatible with old Windows 7 softwares.
CONS
1. Since the Apps are based on scripting languges, it consumes more resources.
2. Metro UI is awesome for touch, and sometimes feels clumsy without it. The gestures are generally not intuitive using a mouse.
3. Power user will miss the main menu.
4. Apps don’t really close in Metro UI, they are suspended after a certain interval of idleness.
VERDICT
Maybe all this work should have gone in for a dedicated netbook version or a tablet version. Old style windows desktop with a Metro coating. I still think it as a gamble by Microsoft; I hope the final release is better suited for non-touch devices as well. Like it or not, the metro interface is here to stay.

Google+ in Chrome gets Translate services
Google +, users can share a link in a language other than English. This, of course, can not be read by all the contacts have to share.
To save you the trouble of opening a new tab or window to access a translation service like Google Translate, Google Translate built in browser Chrome as an extension of Google +. You can see the extent to translate into line with icons 1, observation and action.
Translate feature available on each link or update that is shared, regardless of the language of the message is divided into, or whatever your native language. But it could be friendly resource that can take a lot of computing power to move from one page and find a job in a foreign language.
When you click Translate in any position, you get your text translated immediately without reloading the page. The extension is translated text on a yellow background + Google before. Research In Motion (RIM) on Monday launched the BlackBerry Torch 9810 with BlackBerry 7 operating system in India. It features a large 3.2 inch high resolution touch screen and sliding QWERTY keyboard, faster to write. The smartphone has 8GB of memory, expandable up to 32GB Micro SD card that allows users to take more pictures, store more video and download additional applications.

Viewsonic Tablet Android Honeycomb 3.2 in India next month
Viewsonic introduces its first tablet Honeycomb, the ViewPad 7X during the IFA in Berlin. The tablet will be launched in India in September. Ajay Sharma, country manager of Viewsonic India confirmed that the Indian mobile ViewPad 7x will be launched at a competitive price in the Indian market next month.
The 7-inch tablet is preinstalled with the latest version of Android Honeycomb updated version 3.2. Although the technical specifications for ViewPad 7x are not available, we know it will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core processor.
The display is 7-inch capacitive multitouch with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. One of the best things about 7x is that it uses a 10-point touch technology that makes it more intuitive and interesting to the user. The unit will also bid on and behind the camera and 8GB of internal memory with a 32 GB Micro SD expandable memory.
The device also includes a custom user interface called ViewScene 3D. We are told that the interface is similar to the function return to Windows, but the tiles are stacked in a circular. The interface is fully customizable and users can modify or edit as needed.
One of the most useful of the ViewPad 7x is its software pre-installed GPS Tuner which allows the maps are stored locally on the device so that it can provide data offline browsing. The ViewPad 7x, as mentioned above, is scheduled to launch in India next month, probably at the same time will be released in the international market.
Viewsonic spokesman would not comment on the price of the camera, but looking at the international price, which is 350 euros, which should cost around Rs 30 000 or less.
